NSW Labor leader Chris Minns has opposed calls to increase the GST as people are stretched to the limit and far from saying they could dig a little deeper to give a bit more to the Commonwealth government.

It comes amid repeated calls by NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet for a push towards a higher GST deal – claiming the state has a disadvantage under the current system.

When asked his position on GST reform, Mr Minns said he's open to reallocation of where funds are spent but he does not want to see an increase to the GST or broadening of the base.

"I've spoken to people right throughout this state; no one says can we please pay more GST when tolls are up, taxes are up, charges are up and fines are up," Mr Minns told Sky News Australia.

"The state tax base is growing at 3 per cent a year even though the economy is growing at 2 ... people are really stretched to the limit and no one is saying 'geez I could dig a little bit deeper and give a bit more to the Commonwealth government."
