Ruptly is live from outside a Manhattan federal court in New York City on Monday, November 29 as the opening statements in the trial of British heiress and Jeffrey Epstein’s confidant Ghislaine Maxwell begin.
Earlier on Monday, a jury was selected to hear her case, which is expected to last six weeks.
Maxwell has been in a Brooklyn jail since July 2020 on charges of grooming underage girls for now-deceased US financier Jeffrey Epstein and other rich and powerful men in order to sexually abuse the victims. She has pleaded not guilty and unsuccessfully attempted several times to be released on bail prior to the trial.
The indictment cites four victims whom, according to prosecutors, were groomed between 1994 and 2004, when some were as young as 14 years old.
