Nature holds energy in various forms such as - hydro, nuclear, thermal, etc. and we convert these energies to electric energy using power plants.
Power plants produce only 11000 volts of potential difference, and thereafter step-up transformers are used to increase this potential difference to 20000 volts, which saves a lot of time and money. Now, the transition of this energy is made through a conductor steel reinforced wire or ASCR wires made up of aluminum.
Power stations are always situated at a far distance from our houses, so providing a connection to each house using a single set of cables is not feasible.
Keep that in mind, transmission towers are installed at a specified distance, which connects the cable in a specific manner and facilitates the transition of electrical energy to substations.
Electricity reaching the substations still carries a very high voltage of power, which can't be directed to houses or living places. So in order to reduce the voltage, electricity needs to be passed through step-down transformers and then distribution poles.
After dropping the voltage to 230V with a frequency of 50Hz in India, electric power is supplied to your place.
